From Old Norse gamall (old), from Proto-Germanic *gamalaz, cognate with Swedish gammal, Dutch gammel.

The comparative and the superlative are formed from a different stem: ældre, ældst, from Old Norse ellri, ellztr, from Proto-Germanic *alþizô, *alþistaz, cognate with English elder, eldest, Dutch ouder, oudst and German älter, ältest. The West Germanic languages have a positive from the same stem: English old, Dutch oud and German alt, from *aldaz.
