finfish (plural finfishes or finfish)

Any fish, but especially fish other than flatfish
(informal) Short for finned fish. As in ray-finned fish. Term is used to distinguish them from shellfish, cartilaginous fish and other similar aquatic creatures customarily used as food.

Usage notes

Used industrially to denote ordinary fish, rather than flatfish, eels and other seafood animals.
