Etymology
Possibly borrowed from Vulgar Latin *fangus (“mud”), whence Italian fango.[1] Jokl claims a borrowing from Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌲𐌲𐍃 (waggs, “paradise, *meadow”), from Proto-Germanic *wangaz (“field, meadow”).[1]
