Inherited from Ottoman Turkish دفعةً (defʿaten),[1][2] from Arabic دَفْعَةً (dafʕatan) adverbial accusative of دَفْعَة (dafʕa, “a push, thrust; one go; a payment”), from دَفَعَ (dafaʕa, “to push; to repel; to pay”).[3]
