Previously coûtume, from Middle French coustume, from a Vulgar Latin *cōnsuētūmen or *costūmen, from Latin cōnsuētūdinem (custom, habit), from cōnsuēscō (accustom, habituate). Doublet of costume and consuétude. Cognate with Spanish costumbre, Catalan costum.
