From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-cɔːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cɔʔ (dog); cognate with Semai co (dog, servant, slave), Halang chô (dog), Pacoh acho (dog), Khmu sɔʔ and Mang θɔː¹. Compare also Khmer (cɑɑ, Year of the Dog), a borrowing from Vietic.
