Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *kas, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔas ~ *ʔəs. Cognate with Pacoh ayh, éih, Khasi at, Khmu [Cuang] ʔɛh.
See cứt (“shit”) and củi (“firewood”) for two other known cases where Vietic velar initial corresponds to zero-initial in other Austroasiatic branches.
