Etymology
Inherited from Old Catalan cèrcol, inherited from Latin circulus, diminutive of circus. Doublet of cercle, of which it was essentially an alternative form in medieval Catalan. For the preservation of Latin /ŭ/ in unstressed /kŭl/, cf. spīculum > Catalan espígol.
