Possibly from Proto-West Germanic *broþ (“broth”), from an earlier Proto-Germanic *bruþą (“broth”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁- (“to seethe, roil, brew”). Compare Ancient Greek βρῦτος (brûtos). Akin to Italian brodo.
