Probably from a Vulgar Latin root *brosca, from broscus (compare Medieval Latin bruscus), ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *frosk. Compare Aromanian broascã. Compare also Albanian breshkë, Old French bruesche, Italian rospo, Milanese Lombard brosco, Ladin rusk.
