Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بر آن اول (bir an evvel),[1][2] from بر (bir) + آن (an) + اول (evvel), equivalent to compound of bir (a, one, indefinite determiner) + an (moment) + evvel (before, first, earlier), literally one moment earlier. Cognates with Azerbaijani bir an əvvəl.
