Etymology
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بر آن اول (bir an evvel),[1][2] from بر (bir) + آن (an) + اول (evvel), equivalent to compound of bir (“a, one, indefinite determiner”) + an (“moment”) + evvel (“before, first, earlier”), literally “one moment earlier”. Cognates with Azerbaijani bir an əvvəl.
