Etymology

From Old Swedish barmhærtogher, barmhiærtogher, from Middle Low German barmhertich, apparently a calque of Latin misericors, from miser + cor.

The first part is related to arm (poor, weak) and the second part in erbarmlig and the latter is related to hjärta (heart).

Cognate with Danish barmhjertig, Norwegian Bokmål barmhjertig, German barmherzig and Dutch barmhartig.
