Aromanian

Etymology

It is generally agreed to be from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to gleam), but there is disagreement whether the word is one of the earliest (Proto-) Romanian loans from Proto-Slavic *bolto, or whether it is a pre-Roman substrate word. Compare Daco-Romanian baltă. There is also an Albanian cognate, baltë. Compare also Serbian blato, Russian boloto.
