From Old Swedish bælghia (“to swell up”), from Old Norse belgja (“to inflate”), from Proto-Germanic *balgijaną, causative of *belganą. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰelǵʰ- (“to swell”). Compare Danish bælle.
