From Dutch aardbei (“strawberry”, literally “earthberry”), from Middle Dutch erdbere, from Old Dutch *erdberi, from Proto-West Germanic *erþubaʀi, from Proto-Germanic *erþōbazją. Cognate of Afrikaans aarbei. Mostly replaced by stroberi.
