Compound from afër (“nearby, close”) +‎ ditë (“day”);[1] ditë (“day”) from Proto-Albanian *dīti, from Proto-Indo-European *dih₂tis (“division”). Referring to the planet Venus or the morning star (compare Bardhyl).
