From Old Galician-Portuguese azeite (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Andalusian Arabic, from Arabic الزَّيْت (az-zayt, “oil, edible or for combustion”). Cognate with Portuguese azeite, Spanish aceite, and Hebrew זית (záyit, “olive”).
