Potentially attested as groot en klein zwtwike in 1390, attested with certainty as Zueck in 1526. Contraction of a compound of zuid (“south, southern”) and wijk (“settlement, village”). Compare Middelijk, Noordijk, Oostenrijk, Schadijk, Westrik, De Zoeke and Zoeke.
