Etymology

First attested as waetriloe in 704. Compound of an uncertain first element and lo (“light forest”). The first element has been variously interpreted as Old Dutch weder (“ram”), a compound of Middle Dutch wede (“forest, brushwood”) and aard (“farmland”) and wad (“crossing, ford”).
