Vergissmeinnicht
See also: Vergißmeinnicht
German
Alternative forms
- Vergißmeinnicht (superseded)
Etymology
Univerbation of vergiss + mein + nicht, literally “forget me not”, using the archaic construction of vergessen with a genitive object (contemporary German would be vergiss mich nicht). The flower is considered a symbol of loyalty, friendship and remembrance.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /fərˈɡɪsmaɪ̯(n)ˌnɪç(t)/, /fɛr-/, [fɐˈɡɪs.maɪ̯.nɪçt], [fɛɐ̯-], [-maɪ̯n-], [-ˌnɪç]
- Degemination is even commoner in this word than otherwise, i.e. only one /n/ is usually realised. The loss of the final /t/ is chiefly informal (cf. nicht).
