German

Pronunciation

  • (file)

Noun

Türe f (genitive Türe, plural Türen)

  1. (dated, regional) Alternative form of Tür
Türe geschlossen halten.Keep the door shut.

Usage notes

  • Natural use of Türe in spoken language is found in parts of East and Southwest Germany (Saxony, Baden-Wuerttemberg) and Western Switzerland. It is notable that at the same time Saxony overall prefers Tür in written language.
  • In parts of Austria, southern Germany, and western Germany, Türe is commonly found on signs, such as: Türe geschlossen halten. — “Keep door shut.” This is in spite of the fact that the form is now quite rare in edited texts and moreover is not used in the respective regional vernaculars.[1]
