German

Etymology

From Staatsbürger + -schaft.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈʃtaːt͡sbʏʁɡɐˌʃaft]
  • (file)

Noun

Staatsbürgerschaft f (genitive Staatsbürgerschaft, plural Staatsbürgerschaften)

Usage notes

The word is similar to, but not entirely synonymous with Nationalität. Staatsbürgerschaft means the citizenship of a state, i.e. the possession of a passport, whereas Nationalität means the affiliation with a nation. For example, nationals who live under foreign occupation, continue to have their own nation's Nationalität, but may have the occupying country's Staatsbürgerschaft.
