Borrowed from Old East Slavic Серетъ (Seretŭ), borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sarít, cognate with Sanskrit सरित् (sarit, “river, stream”), Sanskrit सरति (sarati, “to run, flow”), from Proto-Indo-European *sel- (“to leap, jump; to run, flow”).
