सरित्

Sanskrit

FWOTD – 2 February 2022

Etymology

Probably derived from Proto-Indo-European *ser-. Doublet of सिरा (sirā).

Pronunciation

Noun

सरित् • (sarít) stem, f

  1. river; stream
    Synonym: नदी (nadī)
    • c. 1700 BCE – 1200 BCE, Ṛgveda 4.58.6:
      स॒म्यक्स्र॑वन्ति स॒रितो॒ न धेना॑ अ॒न्तर्हृ॒दा मन॑सा पू॒यमा॑नाः ।
      ए॒ते अ॑र्षन्त्यू॒र्मयो॑ घृ॒तस्य॑ मृ॒गा इ॑व क्षिप॒णोरीष॑माणाः ॥
samyáksravanti saríto ná dhénā antárhṛdā́ mánasā pūyámānāḥ.
eté arṣantyūrmáyo ghṛtásya mṛgā́ iva kṣipaṇórī́ṣamāṇāḥ.
Like rivers our libations flow together, cleansing themselves in inmost heart and spirit.
The streams of holy oil pour swiftly downward like the wild beasts that fly before the bowman.
    • c. 500 BCE – 100 BCE, Rāmāyaṇa 1.2.36:
      यावत् स्थास्यन्ति गिरयस् सरितश् च महीतले ।
      तावद् रामायणकथा लोकेषु प्रचरिष्यति ॥
yāvat sthāsyanti girayas saritaś ca mahītale.
      tāvad rāmāyaṇakathā lokeṣu pracariṣyati.
As long as hills and rivers remain on the surface of the Earth,
The story of Rāmāyaṇa shall spread among the humankind.
