Etymology
Borrowed from Portuguese Sciam (“Thailand”), from Thai สยาม (sà-yǎam, “Siam, historical name”), from Pali suvaṇṇabhūmi (“land of gold”) or Sanskrit श्याम (śyāma, “dark”) or Mon ရာမည (rhmañña, “stranger”), the same root as Shan and probably Assam.[1]
