1. A municipality of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. To be merged with Eid on 1 January 2020 under the name of Stad.

Originally only an island name; from Old Norse Selja, possibly derived from sel (“pasture shed”), or less likely from salr (“room, hall”), referring to the cave where Saint Sunniva and her followers dwelled after reaching the island in the 10th century.
