Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teh₂y-o-, from *(s)teh₂y- (to steal). Cognate with Sanskrit स्तायु (stāyu, thief), Old Irish táid (thief), Proto-Slavic *tajiti (to steal), etc.
