Etymology
Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teh₂y-o-, from *(s)teh₂y- (“to steal”). Cognate with Sanskrit स्तायु (stāyu, “thief”), Old Irish táid (“thief”), Proto-Slavic *tajiti (“to steal”), etc.
