Reconstruction:Proto-Turkic/tïŋla-

This Proto-Turkic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Turkic

Alternative reconstructions

  • *tiŋle-

Etymology

From *tiŋ (reason, mind) + *-la (denominal suffix). *tiŋ might be a loanword from Middle Chinese (theng, to listen) yet its back vowel & variant initial *d- make such a derivation difficult (Clauson, 1972:522). Also compared to Proto-Tungusic *ǯiŋ-, Proto-Mongolic *ciŋla- (to listen).

Usage notes

Oghuz descendants have the front vowel variant.

Verb

*tïŋla-

  1. (transitive) to listen
  2. (transitive) to hear
    Synonym: *ẹĺit-
  3. (transitive) to consider, mediate
