From Proto-Balto-Slavic *weiśinjāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱs- (mistletoe). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *wīhsilō (type of cherry), Ancient Greek ἰξός (ixós, mistletoe, birdlime), and Latin viscum (birdlime).
