From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wertenán, from Proto-Indo-European *wertenóm, equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *wert- (to turn, to rotate) + *-eno. Cognate with Sanskrit वर्तन (vártana, rotation, rolling, spindle).
