Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *sworbʰ-o-, cognate with Proto-Germanic *swarbaz (whence Old Norse svarf (“grit, metalic dust”), English swarf). Synchronically, an o-grade action noun of *svьrběti (“to itch”) + *-ъ.
