Etymology
Possibly related to Proto-Slavic *skverti (“to blemish, to thaw”) or via s-mobile to Proto-Slavic *kvara (“taint, deformity”), *kuriti (“to smoke”), *kura (“duststorm, blizzard”) (in East Slavic). Vasmer does not exclude onomatopoeic origin (cf. Proto-Slavic *(s)kvьrъ (“creak”)).
