Etymology

Possibly related to Proto-Slavic *skverti (to blemish, to thaw) or via s-mobile to Proto-Slavic *kvara (taint, deformity), *kuriti (to smoke), *kura (duststorm, blizzard) (in East Slavic). Vasmer does not exclude onomatopoeic origin (cf. Proto-Slavic *(s)kvьrъ (creak)).
