By surface analysis, *sǫ- + *po- + *statъ.
Cognate with Lithuanian stótas (“body build”), Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬁𐬙𐬀 (stāta, “standing”), Latin praestātus (“having excelled”), Ancient Greek ἀντιστάτης (antistátēs, “enemy”).
