Etymology

Synchronically, probably post-verbal from the inchoative *pleskati. Further origin: either onomatopoeic, coined on Balto-Slavic soil, or derived from Proto-Indo-European *plek- (“to hit, to strike; to flatten”) + *-skъ. Related to Lithuanian pleškė́ti (“to knock”), Latvian plekšêt (“to trample, to knock”).

Forms a family of variants/analogous onomatopoeia with Proto-Slavic *plěskъ, *pliskъ/*pliščь, *pľuskъ, *plaskъ.
