Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *álˀkinas. Equivalent to *olkati (to be hungry) + *-ьnъ. Cognate with Latvian al̂kans (greedy, hungry), Lithuanian álkanas (sober), Old Prussian alkīns (sober). Interestingly, the Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian descendants did not overgo a metathesis.
