Etymology

From an earlier **obvolkъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *abwalkas. Morphologically from *ȍb- + *vȏlkъ. It literally means "a thing that shambles (in the sky)". For the loss of -v- between ob- and a vowel compare *obьlъ which comes from an earlier **obvьlъ.
