Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *láupīˀtei.

  • Per Derksen, from a -p- variant of Proto-Indo-European *lowbʰ-, found in *lubъ (bast), Latin liber (bark, book).
  • Per Vasmer, Russian лупи́ть (lupítʹ) is derived from лу́па (lúpa, scab).
  • Per Trubachev, from *lupъ (peel, shell?) + *-iti.
  • Chernkyh adds as cognates Ancient Greek λύπη (lúpē, pain, suffering), λυπέω (lupéō, to torment, to trouble), Sanskrit लोपयति (lopáyati, to harm, to destroy), लुम्पति (lumpati, to rob, to destroy).
