Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From *divъ (“kind of a demon”) + *-ьskъ. If the theory of *divъ being demonized early Slavic *Divъ (“sky god”) is correct, this word might be inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *deiwiškas (“divine, godly”) and be cognate with Lithuanian diẽviškas, Latvian dievisk.
