Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From *divъ (kind of a demon) + *-ьskъ. If the theory of *divъ being demonized early Slavic *Divъ (sky god) is correct, this word might be inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *deiwiškas (divine, godly) and be cognate with Lithuanian diẽviškas, Latvian dievisk.
