Etymology

Of onomatopoeic origin, from duplication of the root of *bъmъ, *brьmъ (buzz, hum) + *-arъ. Cognate with Lithuanian bam̃balas (bumblebee, cockchafer), Latvian bam̃bals (beetle) and further comparable with Sanskrit बम्भरः (bambharaḥ, bee), Ancient Greek βομβυλιός (bombuliós, bumblebee).
