Action/result noun from Proto-Slavic *žьgati (“to burn, to brand”) via enlongation of the root vowel, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰegʷʰ- (“to burn”). Akin to Proto-Celtic *degʷis (“flame, blaze”), Lithuanian dė̃gis (“burn scar”).
