Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *rēdaz, from Proto-Indo-European *Hréh₁dʰos, from *Hreh₁dʰ- (“to think, arrange”). Note the North/West-Germanic shift of Proto-Germanic *ē to ā, also seen in Old High German rāt, Old English rǣd (with Anglo-Frisian brightening).
