Possibly from *muru (group; to gather), reflected in Japanese 群れる (mureru, to gather) and Middle Korean (mwul, group, crowd), via an addition of a suffix *-a. Related to Old Korean *牟羅 (*mura, village) and Jeju *牟羅 (*-mura, village), both appearing in place names.
