Possibly related to *linþaz (“mild, soft”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Has also been compared to Albanian lëndë (“wood, material”), Lithuanian lentà (“(linden) board”), Russian лут (lut, “(linden) bast”) (< Proto-Slavic *lǫtъ), thereby perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *lentéh₂.[1]
