Uncertain;[1] possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰowh₂-o-m, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂- (“smoke, haze”).[2][3] Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás (“mist; smoke”), Lithuanian dúlis (“mist”).
