Probably from Proto-Uralic *lëpće (cradle), in which case cognate to Erzya лавсь (lavś), Eastern Mari лепш (ĺepš), Tundra Nenets [script needed] (jebcᵊ), Nganasan [script needed] (labsə) and Southern Selkup [script needed] (t́ops) (Tym) (all likewise meaning "cradle").
