Uncertain; possibly reconstructible as *ɸletros, liquid metathesized from earlier *ɸeltros, from Proto-Indo-European *pél-tro-m, from *pel- (to envelope, wrap around) + *-trom, compare Latin pellis (pelt, hide), Proto-Germanic *fellą (skin, hide).[1]
