From Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂-n-yé-ti, from *bʰeh₂- (“shine”) (compare Greek φαίνομαι (faínomai, “to seem, appear”)),[1] Sanskrit भाति (bhāti, “to shine”), Old Irish bán (“white”).[2]
