Old Norse
Etymology
Uncertain; presumably from Proto-Germanic *hwekkaną, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeǵ⁽ʰ⁾-néw-ti, from *kʷeǵ⁽ʰ⁾- (“to flee, escape”) + *-néwti. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *čeznǫti (“to disappear”), Latin conquinīscō (“to crouch down”).[1]
Descendants
- Faroese: kvökka
- Norwegian: kvekka
- Swedish: väkka (dialectal)
