Perhaps from Proto-Celtic *ɸlānom, from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥h₂nóm, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (flat).[1][2][3][4] Related to Proto-Celtic *ɸlārom (floor), *ɸlātrom. Cognate with Latin plānus.
