Etymology 1
From obsolete Maseln, from Middle Low German māselen, which is cognate with Middle Dutch masel (“speckle”), whence modern Dutch mazelen (“measles”), and Old High German masala (“lump of blood”). The modern German form through later conflation with Maser, which is probably related with the former.
